Claude Code keeps its conversations as files in ~/.claude/projects, and Codex in ~/.codex/sessions. Neither gives you one place to search them, and Claude Code deletes transcripts after 30 days by default. Alchemist Coder indexes them, finds any of them in a second, and can keep them for good.
What you get
- One full-text search for four CLIs: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI (
~/.gemini/tmp/*/chats) and Grok Build (~/.grok/sessions), in a local SQLite index. - Read-only: your original files are only read, never modified.
- Every agent in a conversation: the main agent, the subagents it launched and the ones those launched, each with its own tab.
- A backup that outlives the 30 days: the opt-in versioned backup mirrors your Claude Code and Codex history into a git repository you choose, so conversations the CLIs delete stay in the app.
- Export: any conversation, subagents included, to Markdown, HTML or JSON.
- Recent: the latest conversations of every project, newest first, with how long ago each one was.
It works with the plan you already pay for
The history needs no model and no account. If you use Claude Code with a Claude subscription, or Codex with ChatGPT, the app finds and searches those conversations as they are on your disk. Nothing is uploaded: the app has no telemetry.
How to try it
- Download Alchemist Coder for macOS, Windows or Linux (free, AGPL-3.0).
- Open it: the first launch shows the conversations it already found.
- Type in the search box, or open History mode.
- Optional: in Settings › Backup, choose a folder and back up.
What the free edition does not do
The free Community edition runs Claude Code and Codex on local models only, through Ollama or LM Studio. Running agents on your Claude or ChatGPT subscription, or on API keys, belongs to Pro, which is not on sale yet. Searching and reading your history works whichever plan you use.
The builds are not signed by Apple or Microsoft yet, so macOS and Windows warn you the first time. The download section explains the two clicks it takes.
Questions
Does Claude Code delete old conversations?
Yes. By default Claude Code removes transcripts older than 30 days. Alchemist Coder’s opt-in backup copies them into a git repository you choose before that happens, and the app keeps showing them.
Does it send my conversations anywhere?
No. The index lives on your computer, and the app has no telemetry. On its own it only asks npm and PyPI which agent CLI versions are current.
Can I search Codex and Claude Code together?
Yes. One search covers Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and Grok Build conversations at once.
